PORTSMOUTH, VA. (WAVY.com) -- The color pink popped up everywhere in hopes of defeating a disease early Saturday morning. Hundreds joined the cause in Norfolk, for the 2008 "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk.
More than 6000 participants showed up, and over $350,000 was raised at the 3rd annual walk.
Vanguard Industries was there. They make military insignia, medals and ribbons. Everything they do honors our military and now they're honoring the millions of women who have and will battle breast cancer.
Something about the color pink just makes you feel happy, and all around Vanguard Industries in Norfolk, you'll find happy workers.
They're mostly women - assembling the military medals our service members wear with pride. And now, they proudly wear T-shirts supporting the fight against breast cancer.
"I said, 'Well that's a great cause...I'll support that, 'cause I already been there done that,'"
said cancer survivor Jessica Brown. "You never know when it's gonna hit in your home. So it's always good to give back, 'cause you never know when you're gonna need it."
She's helped rally the troops at Vanguard - who've been selling the T-shirts, wristbands and of course the pink tags in support of breast cancer awareness.
John McClain is the boss and he's bursting with pride. His 135 employees have raised more than $3,000 for the American Cancer Society and 88 have signed up for the "Making Strides" walk. He says that's just the kind of people they are -- now he asks, what kind of people do you work with?
The local "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk was held at Harbor Park in Norfolk.
